This post is for Deborah Semel Demirtaş whose 'Artist on a Marginal Coast' blog I enjoy reading. She's recently wrote about cows by the sea and I promised to send her some pictures of cattle that graze the Swedish coast. I'm always wary of cows and these ones stare intently at me every evening as I pass by, but so far I have only briefly interrupted their nibbling. Occasionally they rush wildly up the seashore so I know that one day I will have to avoid a charging cow and I had better start researching defence techniques. All suggestions welcome.
Well, how weird is that?! This morning's Instagram photo by us is some cows overlooking the Bodrum coast near the windmills! :) There was a wall between us and them. Not brave with cows since getting chased by some in a farmer's field as we were walking in the Yorkshire Dales one time. I can smile now but...
ReplyDeleteGlad I'm not the only cowphobe
DeleteDear B to B, I hope you are having a relaxing, enjoyable visit with friends in Sweden. I'm wondering if the heat there is high. Here we are experiencing high temperatures and higher heat indexes. Saturday the heat index may be as high as 112.
ReplyDeleteAs to the cows: We had a couple of dairy cows on the far where I grew up. They were Jerseys and very docile and sweet. I can't imagine one of them charging me. If they do come toward you, I suspect it will be only out of curiosity. Take care. Peace.
Hi Dee, its good to hear from you . Have your convent stories come out in a book yet?
DeleteDear Annie, they haven't. I'm hoping to self-publish them toward the end of the year. I'll blog about that at the time. I'm nervous about self-publishing, but it seems to be the way of the world today. I hope the story will speak to readers and do some good. Thank you for asking. Peace.
DeleteAnnie,
ReplyDeleteUnless they have a calf at foot there is normally nothing to worry about and even then, as long as you don’t get between the cow and calf you should be ok.
If you’ve got a dog with you let it off the lead as it is the most likely the point of interest, the dog will be able to look after its self while you make for the nearest exit.
Young cattle will quite often run towards you but it is usually only out of curiosity and if you run they will keep following, but if you stand your ground they will stop some distance away. However don’t be surprised if when you walk away they continue to follow you.
If you’re feeling brave, and it isn’t the cow and calf scenario, walk or run towards them.
Hope I can remember this.
DeleteAnnie,
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you're still in Sweden.
As a kid on a farm, I learned that running toward cows waving my arms would turn them away. We had dogs that would chase them, but every now and then, a cow would turn on the dogs which would immediately rout them. We thought it was very funny. Take care and enjoy your vacation.
Jake is not at all keen on cows - probably for this reason
DeleteBeats me! :-D
ReplyDeleteYou must have them in your rural Norfolk
DeleteI agree with Gulsum Dave, as long as the cow is without calf then there is normally not a problem. It is though a fact that people have actually been hurt or killed by cows.
ReplyDeleteSwedish cows look as if they have smaller heads than ours!
These ows lead a very nice life - all day on the coast and an amble back to the farm about 9pm
