Back in Bodrum one year on.

A mill pond stillness descends on Bodrum Harbour on Sunday

Süt Liman
literally
"milk harbour"

I have inadvertently ignored the one year anniversary of arriving back in Bodrum and starting this blog so I should refer to the milestone as it whizzes into the distance.  We are continuing to enjoy being back in Turkey and that is probably the best reason to celebrate.  It still seems like a homecoming and I enjoy catching sight of faces from my past life.  Just today walking around Bodrum I said hello to a grocer who used to work in the marina in 1982,  a friend my husband knocked around with in Ankara in the 1960s,  a basketball coach who's team was supreme in Bodrum in 1990,  the best mayor we ever had (1994 -1999) and the the last sponge diver in Bodrum who was varnishing his boat.  This continuity is very comforting in a country that is changing so fast. Bodrum has grown like Topsy; Anatolia is encroaching on its Aegean heart and the Bodrum peninsula is fast disappearing under concrete and stone. This is nothing new - those living here have been making the same complaint since I arrived 31 years ago and I'm sure my daughter will be voicing the same concerns when she's my age.  We shall continue to "go with the flow" as befits two pisceans (almost) living the life of Riley.

Looking back over my 129 posts I'm embarrassed to find that there are not many pictures of Bodrum Town.  My first new year's resolution was to take better pictures, my second is to take them of Bodrum.   Here's a few to start as I mean to go on.

  1. I've so enjoyed your blog, with or without photos of Bodrum, Annie. I was surprised you'd only been back just over a year - you do seem so very settled there. Keep it up, I'm following your flow. Axxx

  2. The photographs took me back to trips to Turkey...thank you.

On my last trip to France I went to buy sandwich making material in the little supermarket in the town to which my friends have moved...and found that the chap on the butchery counter used to be my butcher years ago and miles away. We had a wonderful gossip!

  3. That year has gone by very quickly but you seem to have packed a lot into it. The photos are great. I love the little old narrow back streets in Bodrum.

    Happy one year anniversary...keep blogging!

  4. It's great to look back on an anniversary with satisfaction and pride. Your blog has been our window into Bodrum, a place (we're a bit embarrassed to say) we've never visited as yet. Your lovely photos are great motivators.

  5. A good new year's resolution - to add more photos of Bodrum. It's so picturesque, despite the concrete and stone. We did the same thing last year and made sure there was a Fethiye photo at least once a week. Think we almost forget where we live sometimes, we're all so busy blogging! :)

  6. Having discovered your blog less than a year ago, I too thought you had been back in Bodrum for much longer. I have enjoyed your ponderings and observations about changes and sameness, and have loved your explorations and have learned a great deal about Turkey and archeology...and I love your dog. Looking forward to the next year. Janice x
