A Glance Back in Time.

When I was in England at the beginning of this year, I sorted through my father's photo albums and found a few snaps he'd taken of Bodrum in the mid 1980s.  He was no great photographer so excuse the quality but I thought it would be interesting to position myself in the same spot and take pictures of Bodrum today, 30 years on.  Picture number one explains why I always had dirty feet in my 20s as that rough mud in the foreground is in the main square in front of the Town Hall. Palmiye cake shop is in the same place, but the sea is a lot further way now.

These photos are taken in front of the TMT Hotel. There was no access along the sea front in those days, now there is a road, petrol station, houses, a supermarket and a dock for cruise liners and ferries.

I had to stand a bit further back to take today's picture as the original position had me facing a house wall.

This photograph was impossible to replicate so I took the shot from the front looking up. In the original picture I would have been standing in the sea, or probably treading water, at the top left of the frame.

This last one is a personal snap taken in the late 1980s of our office in Tepecik.  It's now a butcher.

  3. Hello,

These photographs are most intriguing. A wonderful historical archive of then and now. It is so interesting to spot the differences and, perhaps even more so seeing what has remained largely the same.

We are already wishing that, after our fifteen years here in Budapest, and witnessing many changes, that we had more of a record of the developments which have taken place. Of course, some changes, as you must find, are not always what one considers to be improvements, but life moves on.

  5. Things changed rapidly even during the few short years we were there. Stand still for a while and someone would haul you off to the tip!

  7. Brilliant project, B to B. How lucky that you have your Dad's photos. (I always have mixed feelings about these kinds of comparisons. Everything changes so fast and not always for the better!)

  8. . . when we started the project to gather, copy and make available old photos taken around our village we thought of doing a similar thing. So much has changed, including the draining of the land where much of the village now stands, the old wattle and daub cottages have crumbled, that there is little or nothing left of the locations by which to identify them. Really enjoyable to track through yours - look forward to more similar posts.
