I am very fond of an arch, especially a stone one. There aren't many in Bodrum so I'm indulging my passion for 'curved symmetrical structures spanning an opening' on a short trip to Hydra.
On my previous visits I didn't venture to the top of the town; using 'too hot', 'too steep' and 'too busy' as excuses, but a wander yesterday in the first sun after a massive rain storm revealed arch after arch after arch.
Here are photos of just a few.
Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteAtmospheric too
DeleteYou're right. There aren't many arches in Bodrum. I wonder why?
ReplyDeleteHydra has a lot as the streets are very narrow and space at a premium, an archway gives room to build above. Bodrum has just expanded outwards
DeleteB to B, Heavenly photos. It's a wonder you can drag yourself away from such beauty (or could it be the 'too hot' or 'too steep' thing?).
ReplyDeleteJust a brief visit this time.
DeleteWhere is the church on the sixth pic?
ReplyDeleteIt is on the Greek island of Hydra, towards the top of the town.
ReplyDelete. . they are a treat for the eyes - there's something about a 'vision' of arches.
ReplyDeleteI've managed to get a few around my courtyard at home but they are nothing like these beauties.
DeleteOOh lovely, BtoB! How do you get to Hydra?
ReplyDeleteThere are several choices - Easiest for me is to fly to Istanbul, then Athens then bus to Piraeus and take the flying dolphin. I've also taken a ferry to Kos, then ferry to Piraeus then dolphin, but that is an overnight trip. Can also fly to Athens, hire a car and drive to Melohi and then a 20 minute water taxi - this is an expensive option, but preferable when the weather is rough.
DeleteDear Annie, like you, I am bemused by stone arches. I always think long, philosophical thoughts when I see a keystone and think of its essence. It is truly the key to the arch. Peace.
ReplyDeleteWe think alike, Dee.
DeleteSo gorgeous, I could spend hours there - lovely photos!
ReplyDeletePerfect time of year for a trip to Hydra. The hot sun bouncing off the stone in Summer makes sightseeing uncomfortable.
DeleteAnother lover of arches here - all the church buildings I've spent so much time in, perhaps? :-) These are beautiful and remind me of the arches I find so appealing in Assisi - another hill town, short of building space.
