Burst Pipe

We thought we had plumbing problems. Driving back from Bodrum last night, we were confused by the sight of police cars which seemed to been heading off the main road up into the forest. A couple of seconds later it became obvious what they were up to. The main water pipe carrying drinking water to Bodrum had burst and gallons of water was pouring onto the main road. The very high central reservation had contained the water and turned our carriageway into a lake nearly half a meter deep. We were diverted onto the other side and couldn't see much in the dark, but the flood had obviously brought down a section of the rock face and several cars were buried under the debris.  Thankfully, I learn from the Hurriyet newspaper, that these had been parked so no one was hurt.  So glad we left Bodrum a little later than planned. The last time I drove a Golf into water above its bumper, it coughed and died for ever.

  2. B to B, I'm beginning to think you were born under a bad water star. Water seems to find you and wreak havoc. Take care and head to high ground. BTW, the photo was pretty dramatic.

    1. I drove into a flood in Stonegate on my way to Mayfield a couple of years ago. It was very dark and by the time I saw the flood it was too late. My Golf battled on for a few weeks and then the engine blew up! Can't take the credit for the photo. it was too dark to stop.

  8. It was a bit difficult to say whose socks they were after a few years in a discharge pipe. Definitely socks though.

  9. So whose socks were responsible for this one!

I'm glad no one was hurt and hope the insurance will pay out on the cars and flooded houses.

    1. The story now is that the pipe should have been metal not concrete.

  11. Hello:
Such vast and fast flowing quantities of water can be extremely dangerous so it sounds as if you had a most fortunate escape. And, how distressing that all this water is wasted.

  12. Hello, I just read your last two postings on pipes, blockage, and socks. What a relief that no lives were lost when the rock face crumbled. I'd never dream that roots could do that. Peace.
